Allow me to introduce your new favorite snack: the Hot Dog Grilled Cheese! Combining two classics into one irresistible bite, this simple recipe will have the whole fam asking for seconds.
What You'll Need for Your Hot Dog Grilled Cheese

- Hot dogs
- Hot dog buns
- White and yellow cheddar cheese
- Butter for achieving that perfect golden brown crust
- Ketchup or mustard for dipping
How to Make Hot Dog Grilled Cheese
Step 1: Prep Your Hot Dogs and Buns
Take each hot dog and slice it vertically down the middle without cutting all the way through it. Basically you are butterflying it to open them up.

Also take your hot dog buns, lay them flat and roll them out with a rolling pin.

If you are using block cheese, which I recommend, now is a great time to shred it. I like to keep it classic with white and yellow cheddar. You can really use whatever cheese you like.

Step 2: Butter Up!
Next, butter each side of your hot dog buns. This ensures that irresistible golden-brown crust we all love.
Step 3: Layer It Up
Place your hot dog buns one side down, into a large skillet or griddle which is what I'm using. I toast the buns on both sides and also cook the hot dogs at the same time.

Make sure you also flip the hotdogs so they get cooked on each side. They don't take long so keep a close watch.
Step 4: Grill to Perfection
Once the buns are toasted the way you like add a layer of cheese to one side of the bun, add the hotdog and then more shredded cheese on top.

Then fold over the other side of the bun and allow the cheese to melt inside.

Press down with a spatula if you need to and make sure you add plenty of cheese to each one! You can flip them back and forth a couple of times to make sure the cheese gets melted on the top and bottom.
The residual heat of the buns and dogs will help melt the cheese quickly.

Step 5: Final Touch
Remove your grilled cheese sandwiches from the griddle and serve them whole or cut them in half, just like mom used to! Then serve with ketchup, mustard or my homemade Big Mac sauce for dipping.

Hot Dog Grilled Cheese

Ingredients
- 1 pack of hotdogs
- 1 pack of hotdog buns
- 4 tablespoons of softened butter
- ½ cup shredded yellow cheddar cheese
- ½ cup shredded white cheddar cheese
- Ketchup or mustard (Optional dipping sauces)
Instructions
- Start by butterflying your hotdogs-slice them vertically down the middle, but don't cut all the way through. Use a rolling pin to flatten out the hotdog buns, then spread butter on each one.
- Shred both yellow and white cheddar cheese. You can use bagged cheese if needed, but freshly shredded cheese from the block melts much better.
- Heat a griddle or cast iron pan over medium-high heat. Toast both sides of the buns and cook the hotdogs. This should only take a few minutes.
- Lower the heat to medium. Add a layer of shredded cheese to one side of each bun, place the hotdog on top, then sprinkle more cheese over it. Close the bun and gently press it down with a spatula.
- Let the cheese melt for a few minutes, flipping the sandwich once or twice until both sides are golden and the cheese is fully melted.
- Remove from heat, let them cool for a couple of minutes, and serve with ketchup, mustard, or your favorite dip.
