Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon BBQ seasoning (Or my All Night Rub)
- 1 teaspoon each salt, pepper and garlic blend (Or my All Day Rub)
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 package frozen garlic Texas Toast (8 slices)
- 8 slices American cheese (or Cheddar)
Instructions
- Cook the onions: Heat olive oil on a griddle or skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion, season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, and cook until softened.
- Cook the beef: Add ground beef directly onto the onions. Sprinkle with BBQ seasoning and cook until browned, breaking up the meat as it cooks. Mix onions and beef together.
- Make it sloppy: Stir in ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Let simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.
- Toast the bread: Place frozen Texas Toast on the griddle. Toast 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crisp.
- Build the sandwiches: Add a slice of cheese to each piece of toast. Spoon sloppy joe filling onto half the slices, then top with another slice of cheese and the remaining toast.
- Grill the sandwiches: Continue cooking on low heat for 1–2 minutes per side until cheese is melted and gooey.
- Serve hot: Slice in half for easier handling and enjoy while warm.
Notes
Let the sloppy joe filling thicken before assembling to avoid soggy bread, and don’t skimp on the cheese—two slices per sandwich takes it over the top.
