  • Total Time: 10 hours 10 minutes
  • Yield: 12-15, depending on size

Ingredients

Pulled Pork

  • 2-liter root beer
  • 1 (8-10 pound) pork shoulder butt roast
  • 1/4 cup BBQ seasoning

Homemade Root Beer BBQ Sauce

  • 1 cup root beer
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon salt pepper garlic seasoning

Instructions

  1. Place the pork shoulder in a container and pour the root beer over it.
  2. Marinate the pork in the refrigerator for 24 hours, flipping halfway through if it isn't completely submerged.
  3. Remove the pork from the marinade and pat completely dry.
  4. Generously season all sides with BBQ seasoning.
  5. Preheat the smoker to 225°F and place the pork shoulder on and cook for approximately 1 hour per pound.
  6. When the pork reaches 175°F internal temperature, wrap tightly in foil.
  7. Increase the smoker temperature to 300°F and continue cooking until the pork reaches approximately 200°F and is probe tender.
  8. Slightly open the foil and let the pork rest for 1 hour.
  9. While the pork rests, combine all BBQ sauce ingredients in a saucepan over medium-low heat.
  10. Stir well and simmer for approximately 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has reduced and thickened.
  11. Shred the rested pork and serve with the homemade root beer BBQ sauce.
  12. Serve on toasted buns or use the pulled pork for tacos, nachos, loaded fries, or your favorite BBQ dishes.
